Animal Presence
How Animals Carry Us Through Life and Loss
Animal Presence is about the ways animals stay with us through ordinary life, grief, change, and the moments when words are hard to find. I wrote it from a deeply personal place, but also for anyone who has ever known how much an animal’s presence can mean.
Why I wrote this book
When I lost Bella Rose, I knew I wanted to write something that honored what she had meant to me. But as I began writing, I realized I wasn’t only writing about her.
I kept coming back to how much animals become part of our lives. They’re present for the hard days, the really good days, and so much of what happens in between.
Animal Presence grew out of my own experience with love and loss, but I wrote it for anyone who understands that an animal companion is never “just a pet.”
What you’ll find inside
Animal Presence explores the comfort, connection, joy, and grief that come with loving animals. Through personal stories, reflections, and photos, the book looks at:
how animals help interrupt anxiety, worry, and overthinking
the comfort of having an animal close during hard times
the joy they bring into everyday life
the grief that comes when an animal is gone
what animals can teach us about slowing down and staying present
stories and photos from other people who have loved animals deeply
pet loss and grief resources for readers who need extra support
Who this book is for
This book is for anyone who has loved an animal deeply, found comfort in their presence during a hard time, or knows how painful it is to lose them.
It’s also for anyone who has ever been told, directly or indirectly, that losing an animal shouldn’t hurt as much as it does.
